The MOT retest rule most drivers never use
Leave the car with us and the retest is free. Take it away and the clock starts. Most people pay twice without realising there was a choice.

They get booked together, they happen on the same day, and they do completely different jobs.

An MOT is a legal inspection against a minimum standard: brakes, tyres, lights, emissions, structure, and so on. It produces a pass or a fail. It does not change the oil, it does not replace the filters, and it does not tell you the car is in good health — only that on the day of the test it met the minimum.
A car cannot legally be used on public roads without a valid MOT once it is due. The first one falls on the third anniversary of registration, then every twelve months.
A service is what actually keeps the car alive: oil and filter, air and pollen filters, fluid levels and condition, brake wear measured rather than glanced at, and a proper look at the things that fail quietly. It follows the manufacturer's schedule, which is by mileage or by time, whichever comes first.
An MOT cannot be deferred if the car is being driven. A service can be, within reason, if you are inside the manufacturer's interval. Deferring both is how a £180 job becomes a £600 one.
No. Under Block Exemption rules a manufacturer warranty stays intact when an independent garage services the car, provided the correct specification parts are used and the work is recorded. We use the right parts and we stamp the book. If you want the parts kept so you can see what came off, say so when you book.
Most people do, and it makes sense: the car is with us anyway, and anything the service turns up can be fixed before the test rather than after it. It is also cheaper than booking the two separately.

Two categories account for nearly half of everything recorded. One is usually a five pound bulb. The other rarely is.
