About us

Eighteen years on Torrington Avenue

You are handing over a car and often the keys for a day. This page is the evidence that we are a real business that can put it right if we get it wrong.

How it started

A workshop, not a
sales floor

Halden started with two ramps and one tester. Eighteen years later there are three ramps, four technicians and an MOT bay, and the thing that has not changed is the rule we started with: nobody touches a car until the owner has heard the price.

We are independent, which is the whole point. A franchised dealer has targets on parts and on hours. We have a diary and a reputation in a city where everybody knows somebody who has been stung by a garage.

Cover

What we’re actually insured for

Most garage websites say “fully insured” and stop there, which means nothing. There are several separate covers and plenty of businesses carry one or two. Here is the list. Certificates are on the wall.

Public liability

£5m

Injury to a member of the public or damage to their property arising from what we do, on our premises or off them.

Employers’ liability

£10m

Compulsory with staff. The legal minimum is £5m per claim and non-compliance runs to fines of up to £2,500 a day, so it is worth asking anyone you use.

Motor trade road risk

Customer vehicles

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 any vehicle on a public road needs cover. We road test and we collect, so we carry it. A garage that does neither may not.

Straight answers

What we won’t do

Nobody invents reasons to turn work away, which is why this is the most useful section on the page.

Work without a price

Nothing is touched until you have heard the cost. If we find something mid-job, the car stops and the phone rings.

Structural welding

It needs a specialist with the right equipment. We will refer you rather than patch something that holds the car together.

Repairs worth more than the car

If putting it right costs more than the vehicle is worth, we will say so and let you decide rather than quietly taking the work.

Clear a light and say nothing

We can clear a fault code. We will not do it without telling you what it was and what causes it.

The team

Who’ll be working on it

Four technicians, all directly employed. Nobody subcontracts your car to a unit down the road.
