Terms of service

What you are agreeing to when you book the car in — including how MOT retests actually work.

Build note: boilerplate shaped to this business, referencing the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. It is not legal advice — have it checked before publication.

These terms

These are the terms you agree to when you book work with Halden Motor Works Ltd, company number 09482137, Unit 6, Torrington Avenue, Tile Hill, Coventry, CV4 9AB.

Quotes and prices

A price given over the phone or from photographs is an estimate range, not a quote. A firm quote follows once the car is on a ramp and the fault is identified. That figure is what you pay.

If we find something during the work that changes what is needed, we stop and ring you. We never carry out extra work and invoice for it afterwards.

Booking and cancellation

Some bookings require a deposit, which comes off the final invoice. Cancel or move with more than 24 hours’ notice and it carries over or is refunded. Cancel with less, or do not turn up, and we may keep it — a ramp held empty is a slot we could not fill.

If you booked over the phone or online without visiting us, you normally have 14 days to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. If you asked us to start within that period and we have, you may owe us for work already done.

MOT testing

We are a DVSA approved test station for Class 4 and Class 7. The DVSA sets a statutory maximum fee — £54.85 for a Class 4 car and £58.60 for a Class 7 van — and we charge below it. The fee is payable whether the vehicle passes or fails and does not include any repairs.

Retesting follows the DVSA rules, not ours. A free partial retest applies if the vehicle stays with us and is retested within ten working days, or if it is taken away and returned before the end of the next working day for a DVSA-listed set of items. Outside that, the full fee applies again.

A pass certificate confirms the vehicle met the minimum standard at the time of the test. It is not a guarantee of roadworthiness or of mechanical condition afterwards.

Authorising the work

Nothing beyond the agreed job happens without your authorisation. We will ring, explain what we found, give you a price and wait. If we cannot reach you, the car waits.

Where we recommend work and you decline it, we will note that on the invoice. That is not us being difficult — it protects both of us if the component later fails.

Parts and warranty

Parts we supply carry the manufacturer’s warranty, generally twelve months. Labour on work we carry out is warranted for twelve months. Parts supplied by you are fitted at your risk and we cannot warrant them; we will say so in writing before fitting.

Servicing here does not affect a manufacturer vehicle warranty. Under Block Exemption rules that warranty stays intact provided the manufacturer’s schedule is followed, correct specification parts are used and the work is recorded. We do all three.

Your vehicle with us

Please take valuables out before you drop the car off. Vehicles are kept on secured premises. We hold motor trade road risk cover for driving customer vehicles, which is required under the Road Traffic Act 1988 for road testing and collection.

If a vehicle is left more than 14 days after we have told you it is ready, we may charge reasonable storage.

Payment

The balance is due on collection, by card or bank transfer. We do not release a vehicle before the invoice is settled. Business accounts can be arranged on agreed terms, and late payment may carry interest under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998.

Your consumer rights

Nothing here removes your legal rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, within a reasonable time, and for a reasonable price where none was agreed. If something falls short you are entitled to have it put right, and if that is not possible, to a price reduction.

Complaints and governing law

Ring the workshop and ask for the owner. Most complaints are a misunderstanding about what was agreed, and looking at the car together settles it. If it does not, put it in writing to the address above and we will respond within 14 days. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
