The school-run car

More of our CV3 work is family cars than anything else, and family cars have a distinct wear pattern. Short runs at set times, fully loaded, with a lot of braking and very little motorway. Brakes and tyres go first, and air conditioning quietly stops working because nobody uses it in winter.

Air conditioning is worth a mention because it is the thing people leave longest. A system that is not used seizes, and the refrigerant leaks out slowly whether you use it or not. Running it for ten minutes a month through winter keeps the seals wet and saves a regas.

What can wait, and what cannot

The most useful thing we do for CV3 customers is split a bill into now and later. Brake pads at 4mm can wait until the next service. Brake pads at 2mm cannot. A tyre at 2mm is legal but will not be by winter. A corroded brake pipe is not a conversation, it is a job.

We will always tell you which is which, and we would rather you spread the cost over two visits than not come back at all.

Questions

Cheylesmore questions

Do you work on people carriers and seven-seaters?

Yes. Anything up to Class 4 goes through the normal MOT bay, and Class 7 covers larger vans up to 3,500kg.

My air con has stopped working. Is that a regas?

Sometimes, but not always. It is worth leak testing first — putting gas into a system that leaks means paying twice. We test before we regas, which costs £75.

Can you tell me what needs doing before I commit?

That is the whole point of the phone call. We tell you what it needs now, what can wait until the next visit, and what it will cost either way.

How far ahead should I book an MOT?

You can present a car up to a month minus a day before the expiry and keep the original date. Booking a fortnight out usually gets you the slot you want.

Do you take card?

Yes, card or bank transfer on collection.
